Unconscious Bias Training for 450 Captain Pilots and the Hiring Team at a Global Airline
The request:
Unconscious Bias training for 450 Captain Pilots assessing and training other pilots. To tackle industry specific biases and create a culture of respect and inclusion. To raise awareness, expand mindsets and change behaviours.
Second request: Workshops on mitigating negative impact of unconscious bias in hiring and selection practices for the hiring teams across all functions.
Our solution:
A roll-out of 30 in-person unconscious bias workshops partnering with the stakeholders to refine content to the culture, environment and nature of their work.
Relatable content and a respectful approach partnering with the participants to expand their mind-sets and behviours.
Customised content on how bias shows up in the interview process
Transformation and Outcomes:
- Participants thankful for the insights they gained and options for practical application in their work life and environment. Many were very cynical at the beginning of the session and the shift was hugely noticeable.
- More inclusive practices developing new pilots, improved culture between cabin crew and pilots and among pilots.
- Hearing positive testimonials, the senior leadership requested a session for themselves plus some discussion on DEI and why it matters. Later they endorsed a DEI team, provided budget and support.
- The recruiting and interview team were equipped with a strategy and process to catch bias in their selection process plus a culture to talk about it. They reported more mindful processes, more diverse selection and ability to on-board diverse candidates successfully.
